GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset, and we are now seeking to add to our team. We are looking for a Director of Safety Hawaii to join our team. This role is open to multiple locations in Hawaii, depending on candidate fit.
Position Description
The Director of Safety Hawaii serves as a key leader of GBI’s corporate safety team. This role provides direction and leadership bridging corporate vision and field execution, ensuring that safety is embedded in every level of the organization to protect the health and well-being of every employee. The Director oversees the implementation, and continuous improvement of company-wide safety programs, ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, etc.), and drives initiatives that reduce risk, enhance performance, and align with GBI’s mission and values.
Position Summary
Strategic Leadership Support
- Assists with the development and execution of the long-term safety vision in alignment with GBI’s strategic vision and
- annual operating plan as well as industry best practices
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the VP of Safety, providing insight on safety impacts related to strategy, mentorship, project
- execution, compliance and risk management
- Champion cultural transformation initiatives that embed safety, emphasizing behavioral safety and frontline engagement
- Establish and monitor safety performance metrics (leading and lagging indicators) to identify trends and improvement
- opportunities.
- Represent GBI with external partners, including ACIG, regulatory agencies, and industry associations.
Program Development & Oversight
- Implement, and continuously improve corporate safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure consistency and
- effectiveness across all GBI divisions, subsidiary organizations, regions and projects.
- Leverage digital tools and analytics to enhance visibility, proactive risk management, and data-driven decision making
- Oversee incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans; ensure lessons learned are shared and
- acted upon companywide.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Mitigation
- Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Assist in development and execution of the annual Project Life Saver (PLS) plan.
- Partner with insurance providers, legal counsel, and regulatory bodies as necessary during investigations or claims.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and inspire the Safety Professionals and Subsidiary Organizations within the Hawaii Region.
- Build succession pipelines, development plans and assist in annual reviews to strengthen safety professionals at all levels
- Promote cross-functional collaboration between Safety, Operations, Claims, Equipment, HR, and Legal teams to drive
- shared accountability for safety outcomes
- Collaborate in the GCIP implementation for subcontractors by working closely with our GCIP manager, project teams and
- the contracting department.
Operational Integration
- Partner with safety professionals and Operations to integrate safety goals to deliver balanced and sustainable
- operational performance
- Support and guide safety professionals in executing programs that meet corporate standards and Operational needs.
- Conduct regular site visits to engage with frontline workers and assess program effectiveness

This position offers a salary range of $160,000 to $180,000 annually.

Position Requirements
Required Education, Experience, and Technical Knowledge
- Candidates must have the legal right to work in the US without employer sponsorship.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive safety leadership in heavy civil construction or related high-risk industry
Knowledge and Certification:
- Extensive knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and environmental health & safety regulations
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), CHST, or similar accreditation required
- Proven ability to lead through influence, communicate across all levels of an organization, and earn the trust of field personnel.
Travel:
- This role requires up to 50% travel, including frequent neighbor island travel with overnight stays and occasional mainland travel as needed.
