Role Purpose
As an EHS Technician for the Fernley, NV Plant, you will play a critical role in elevating the site’s environmental, health, and safety performance. You will act as a proactive leader—driving safety improvements, strengthening compliance, enhancing employee engagement, and building a resilient safety culture aligned with Johns Manville’s core values: People, Passion, Performance, and Protection.
Key Performance Objectives & Success Indicators:
Improve Safety Culture & Employee Engagement
- Lead initiatives that increase safety awareness and active participation across all shifts, resulting in measurable improvements in behavior‑based safety observation trends.
- Ensure every new hire, contractor, and visitor completes a high‑quality safety orientation that establishes clear expectations and promotes a culture committed to protection and accountability.
Strengthen Hazard Identification & Risk Reduction
- Achieve year‑over‑year reduction in near misses and workplace hazards by conducting regular site evaluations and initiating rapid corrective action.
- Evaluate and enhance energy control procedures (LOTO) to ensure they reflect current operations and reduce risk exposure.
Improve Compliance & Environmental Stewardship
- Maintain full compliance with environmental standards by ensuring accurate, timely collection of environmental permit data, stormwater samples, and documentation.
- Strengthen waste management performance by ensuring proper handling of universal and hazardous waste streams and maintaining flawless manifest documentation.
Support Continuous Improvement & Data‑Driven Outcomes
- Analyze incident and audit trend data to recommend and implement targeted improvements that reduce injuries and operational interruptions.
- Improve training completion rates by managing and optimizing computer‑based learning modules to ensure timely and compliant training delivery.
Enhance Audit Readiness & Management System Performance
- Contribute to successful internal and external EHS audits by maintaining high‑quality documentation and proactively addressing audit findings.
- Support ISO 14001 readiness and recertification efforts by ensuring consistent alignment with environmental management system requirements.
What You Bring to the Team:
- High school diploma or GED required, Associate Degree is preferred.
- 2 or more years of experience in a safety and/or environmental role in an industrial setting preferred. Comfortable working in a plant environment.
- Prior Safety Specific Training (OSHA 30 Hour, Confined Space, lockout tagout, etc.) or ability to complete within first 6 months of position.
- Passionate about working safely.
- Public speaking or training experience; enhancing training some development.
- Excellent communication, training, and organizational skills.
- Leadership skills to assist the site Safety leader in directing personnel, implementing initiatives, supervising teams, and performing follow-up activities.
- Analytical ability to assess complex situations and apply problem solving strategies.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Ability to use a variety of software applications to analyze, monitor data, create reports, and presentations.
- Ability to work independently.
