Alfred State is looking for a dynamic professional to manage the college's hybrid advising program and the Academic Advising Center. This position will be responsible for supervising the Center's professional academic advisors. This individual will work collaboratively with the staff in the Center for Academic Resources and Excellence, including Student Success, EOP and accessibility areas. This person will work directly with the Registrar's, Admissions, and Financial Aid offices. This person will provide professional development for new faculty advisors, coordinate other professional development regarding best practices of active advisors, and maintain the college's advising handbook. The academic advisors collaborate with a team of Academic Success Coaches similarly dedicated to providing the best possible student success support experiences for students. This is a 12-month position.

The successful candidate will:

  • Oversee a center that provides both walk-in and scheduled appointment times in the Academic Advising Center and other locations across campus
  • Conduct or coordinate group advising sessions (seminars) for particular majors
  • Provide professional development to new and current faculty advisors (Develop and implement advising training programs materials, services, and strategies for use with students, faculty advisors, and students)
  • Provide support and training for students around academic advising processes and procedures
  • Serve as a centrally located point of contact for students and make appropriate referrals to other resources and offices
  • Collaborate with academic success coaches to provide holistic support for all students, those on probation and in the EDGE program, to aid in their academic success
  • Support new students at orientations, week of welcome, open houses, and other related public and internal events
  • Coordinate pre-scheduling of first year and transfer students
  • Plan and manage the EDGE LLC and teach related coursework.
  • Co-advise and coordinate co-advisement for students with department faculty advisor, or transition students to a department faculty when appropriate
  • Update the college's academic advising handbook and coordinate changes and updates with the records and financial services office.
  • Update and maintain accurate information on the College's website and portal.
  • Learn all necessary campus systems related to job duties, i.e., Excel, Banner 9, D2L Brightspace, Starfish, Schedule Planner, and Degree Works
  • Develop, test, and maintain academic advising software
  • Maintain contacts with other campus offices including all academic departments
  • Assist in identifying issues with policies and regulations, and recommend changes
  • Interpret academic policies and serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents, and academic advisors
  • Maintain knowledge of all degree program requirements and assist department chairs in updating degree plans
  • Coordinate advisement of undeclared majors and oversee courses in degree exploration
  • Oversee advisement teams for students in undeclared, individual studies, and interdisciplinary studies majors
  • Serve on committees related to job duties and responsibilities.
  • Conduct annual assessment of student success metrics related to advising including data collection and analyses.
  • Participate in regional, state, and national advising professional development professional development, college committees, and other projects as assigned
  • Work collegially and professionally with constituents and all members of the college community at all times


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • 3-5 years of experience in academic advising, academic success coaching, and/or counseling students
  • Demonstrated understanding of the educational role of academic advising in enhancing student learning and development
  • Ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and developmental needs, with ability to work collegially and professionally with a diverse community and all constituents
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership or supervisory experience
  • Teaching experience, specifically Career Exploration workshops and/or presentations
  • Related online teaching, learning or advising experience
  • Recent professional development related to current college student issues and student success strategies
  • Experience in advising students who are academically at risk
  • Experience with D2L Brightspace, Excel, GUI Banner, and Degree-Works
  • Experience with leading faculty and student development
  • Experience in interdisciplinary studies education or advising experience
  • Member of NACADA
